Bart Larter has been riding a bodyboard since about the same time he picked up his first guitar in 1993—two passions that arrived together and never left. Growing up in Gonubie on South Africa’s East Coast, surrounded by epic right-hand point breaks, heavy slabs, and the occasional beach break, Bart’s skills were shaped early. With the Gonubie Point riders putting on an inspiring show throughout the early ’90s, gravitating toward bodyboarding felt inevitable.
For more than 30 years, Bart has remained deeply committed to the sport. Along the way, he’s earned several solid competitive results, including his standout achievement: winning the Juniors division at the Igoda Classic in 2002. More recently, he claimed bragging rights by defeating local rival Dylan Muhlenberg at the 2022 David Lillenveld Pro-Am, alongside earning the occasional podium finish in the Men’s division at the SA Champs.
For Bart, bodyboarding has always been about more than results—it’s about the community, the culture, and a lifelong love for the boog. He currently serves as the Cape Town Bodyboarding Captain, continuing to give back to the sport that shaped him.
